Lightweight Comfort: The Science of Honeycombing

At Shoe Lift Express, we utilize high-quality Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) to craft our custom shoe lifts. This material is specifically selected for its optimal durometer—balancing rugged durability with a lightweight profile to ensure your gait remains as natural as possible.

Optimizing Weight and Flexibility

A common challenge with orthotic modifications is that as the height of the lift increases, so does the weight of the footwear. To counteract this, we employ a specialized technique known as honeycombing for lifts 1″ and higher.

Honeycombing involves strategically hollowing out internal sections of the EVA material. This structural modification serves two primary purposes:

  • Weight Reduction: By removing excess material from the core of the lift, we can reduce the overall weight of the modification by 25% to 40%. This significantly decreases leg fatigue and makes the shoe feel more like a standard sneaker rather than a heavy orthopedic device.

  • Enhanced Flexibility: Solid blocks of high-density material can often feel rigid. The honeycomb geometric pattern allows the lift to compress and flex naturally with your foot’s movement, improving the transition from heel-strike to toe-off.

Seamless Aesthetics

While the functional benefits of honeycombing are significant, the aesthetic of your footwear remains a priority. This process is strictly internal; the hollowed sections are sealed within the lift and covered by the shoe’s outsole or a professional finish. When looking at the exterior of your completed shoe, there is no visual indication of the honeycombing—only a sleek, professionally finished lift that feels remarkably light on your feet.
